Nation Building - A Task For All!

In discussing Nigeria, sometimes it is difficult and sometimes nauseating because most often than not, what we dissipate our energy on are empheral and irrelevant. The core issues that we should be discussing are often relegated to the background, and often treated as non-existence. To me the Nigeria problems are multi-faceted and deep rooted but not unsumountable. What is required to solving them is the political will to solve them plus the concerted effort of all the citizenry. The root of our problems to me therefore lies with our values systems. The question is what creates value? Lie in the heart of value creation are education, exposure and experience. Our education which comes from formal and informal learning plays significant role in what we accept as the norm, and thrives that drive our actions and inactions. In other words, what we learn from the four wall of classrooms, religious settings, and interaction with fellow man from the home to the streets are germane to the ...

The Politics of Budgeting

Every year, governments across levels come up with the financial estimates for the day to day running of government business, and for the pursuit of  certain projects for the society. A typical budget is comprised of two basic components namely: public revenue which represents the different sources through which the government hopes to generate income to finance its proposed expenditure. The other part is public expenditure which consists of list of things and or projects that government is embarking upon in any given fiscal year. Each of these subdivision can be further divided into: Capital receipts and recurrent revenue for the public revenue component; and capital and recurrent expenditure for the Public Expenditure component. The budget as a financial blue print revealing the dynamics of the state concerning the raising and spending of government revenue over the years has continued to be a subject of debate in Nigeria and even in the most developed world. This is because, ...

PRIORITY

A s humans, there are so many things that try to seek our attention. They pry on our time, resources, and even our thoughts. The way they present themselves to us is as if without them, life cannot go on. However, friends on a more deeper thinking, we will discover most of these things can actually be done without. It is therefore important we get our priority right. To achieve this, we must try to listen to our voice of reason above the voice of emotion. While our voice of emotion presents to us our wants, the voice of reason suggests our needs. So we must learn to meet our needs and not our wants. Without that, we are bound to suffer from self-deprivation which is injurious to our health and by inference, our entire life. Thank you for your time. Wishing you a glorious Sunday.

Barca Defeat- My Take Away

F ailure is not final. Success is not final, but focus is essential in the world of sports as in the game of life. No one would have thought the 'almighty' Barca will not proceed to the next round of the Champion League, but the reality is, they won't. It is painful to their admirers like me, but I think there is much more we must learn from the episode. That you start well does not mean you will finish well if you are not focus enough on your life dreams and goals. Same is equally true of the other divide. Starting on a wrong footing is not always the end of the world like Roma has shown in this match. If you are focus and persistence enough, you can outshine your greatest rival, put your critics to shame, while putting smiles on the faces of your fans. Yet in all, I stand with Barca, for the truest test of friendship is not known in moment of triumph, but in the hours of trials. Barcelona all the way!

THIS NIGERIA MUST DIE (Part 1)!

It was Christ who said:  " Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears  much  fruit " . The Nigeria present story of penury and underdevelopment may continue for years to come except there is a rebirth. Without the death of Nigeria present state, then all our quest for good governance and development will continue to be a mirage. For instance, our obsession with wealth and celebration of people of opulence without a track record of the sources of their wealth is one evil that must be put to death. There is a need for a new culture of value for hard work and the dignity of labour if we have to have a headway as a country and as a people. It is time to build a new Nigeria we will all be proud of, by encouraging individual productivity and optimal utilization of potentials. Furthermore, the 'spirit' of average and mediocrity must be put to death. There is a negative psyche in the affairs o...

Nigeria Electoral Act Amendment - The Matter Arising

Law is made for the man and not man for the law. This no doubt accounts for the need for constant review of the laws to reflect the yearnings and aspirations of the people in any given society. On a surface, one may wonder why Nigeria Electoral Act has to be amended at every General Election time, but with the understanding of the above position, the reason is understood. Though one may still argue that it does not have to be the case at every turn of Election if only those who are saddled with the responsibility will do the needful. We must however not be unmindful that ours Democracy is a growing one which must be subjected to the rigour of time and experience. This is because new issues that were not previously envisaged by the drafters of the Constitution must certainly arise. The need for constant review of our Constitution is even more apparent considering the fact that the 1999 Constitution is a product of military decree. For instance, the Kogi State Election issue is one whi...

The Worth and Dignity of a Nigerian

Dear reader, it is quite a long time I  have commented on global, national and local issues. It is a along time because so many things have happened, and yet it seems nothing is happening. The time we are in are really not the best of time in our national life, and at the global level though ours seems to have reached a boiling point. Sometimes, it becomes hard to choose what to comment on, and what not to comment. It is particularly appalling at the rate at which lives of people have been lose daily in the global world arising from man in inhumanity to humanity. Indeed, from psychopathic shooting by adolescent in a High School in Florida, USA to the mindless killing by Fulani Herdsmen militia; this is indeed is not a pleasant moment in the global community. The Boko Haram menace is a source of concern and worry equally. As if this is not enough, about 50 Yobe school students have been kidnapped, when we are yet to recover about kidnapped 100 plus Chibok girls. How about the nu...
