THE NIGERIAN 8TH SENATE AND THE REST OF US

Some days ago, I commented on twitter that the current Senate under the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki is hell-bent on bringing down the government of President Muhammodu Buhari; some people took it personal. But the events as they unfold to me seem to be in that light.

The present Senate started on an acrimony note when they choose to go against the wishes of the ruling party - All Progressives Congress leadership hierarchy by electing the principal officers of their own. I have no objection to that; it is their internal arrangement.

However, many of the resolutions and motions of the upper legislature in recent times may demand further and more scrutiny. Yes, we cannot forget in a hurry the intrigues and politics that surrounded and pervaded the screening of the ministerial nominees.

Following that is the attempt to make a mockery of the 2016 budget in which the Senate invented  new budget lexicons: 'Missing Budget', 'Padded Budget'; which academic researchers may have to spend time to research on in future.

We were hardly through with that when the Senate proposed to buy new set of cars in addition to their collected vehicle allowances.

As if that was not enough, the Senators reversed the decisions of the electricity distribution companies and the National Electricity Regulation Commission to come up with a realistic electricity tariff capable of helping us realized our dream of a stable power supply.

Added to this, the price of JAMB (UTME) forms already sold and of which examination almost written was quashed from #6500 to #2500 at a time when the govt needs all the money it can generate , and with a note that the result should now last for three years without considering the ripple effects.

What about the condemnation of the unbundling of the NNPC yesterday which no doubt has become a conduit pipe for the Nigeria State. We cannot also forget in a hurry, the purchase of exotic cars by the Senate President when a lot of Nigerians go to bed hungry.

How about the call for the reversal of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) introduced by the Federal Government through which the government has been able to weed out 29,000 ghost workers thereby saving the government a lot of billions?

Hence, I would like to ask: whose interest is the Senate protecting?
