SARAKI, SENATE AND THE REST OF US

The last few weeks have been turbulence for our dear country Nigeria. It is as if we can never get tire of heating of the polity. Sorry, I mean it is like the political usurpers and custodian of our common heritage cannot get tire of creating political tension and unrest.

Day by day, the drama gets dramatic and the song remains the same. We continue to merry-go-round in a cyclical cycle while lives of the present and the future generations are being mortgaged day in day out. Indeed, nothing seems to be working, and every progress made seems to be in retrogression.

Unfortunately, the supposed solution providers to our myriad of problems seems to be sleeping or deliberately embarking on sabotage of  our collective destiny. How do we describe the intentional removal of projects that can help to fast-track the development of the country in the budget such as the Lagos -Calabar Rail project, Second Niger Bridge project, among others in preference of self-aggrandizement projects by the National Assembly members, not to mention the purchase of exotic cars for senators in the midst of wants and penury.

While nobody questioned the authority of the Senate to appropriate as this is one of their constitutional duty; an infraction on the budget prepare by the executive for no apparent justification is nothing but a disservice to the common man on the streets.

Most hilarious but unfortunate scenario is the proposed plan by the Senate to amend the Code of Conduct Tribunal Act because of the on-going trial of the Senate President. To me this singular act, is a misnomer and aberration which ordinarily will not happen in any sane society especially in a society where the citizenry are politically conscious of their rights. While this plan goes on, the Senate Ethics Committee has the effrontery to call for the appearance of the Chairman of CCT which is nothing but another insult to our collective intelligence.

The question that agitate my mind is how long are we going to be ruled and governed by criminals and crooks with no fear of God and no respect to our sanctity as a people?

Fellow Nigerians, something needs to be done; and the solution is in our Constitution as bad as it has been portend. Every elected officers: executives and legislators can be removed from Office though the process is rigorous; but it is not an impossible task; and somebody has to be used as a scapegoat.

The problem with us is that we have this mindset that government and leaders actions have nothing to do with us, when apparently it does especially considering the immortal words of Milliband  which says: more than ever before, man live in the shadow of the State, what they now want to do as an individual or a group depends on the sanction of the State, for it is possible for a man not to be interested in what the State does but it is impossible not to be affected by it.

Indeed, our lives and I say our lives is woven in cloister web such that every global act or policy made by the developed nations have far-reaching consequences on the developing nations to the extent that poverty anywhere is a threat to prosperity everywhere, just as insecurity anywhere is threat to global peace.

Let us assumed that the Senate President lacks the morals to do the right thing, we as a people must awaking ourselves to do the right thing. Otherwise, the future looks bleak for us all. We must speak and act in our little way to move Nigeria forward.
