The Madness of a Continent

The Africa continent no doubt is a failure as far as the issue of leadership is concerned, all thanks to self-imposed greedy and selfish leaders. Added to this is the cowardice and passivity of the followers.

Every time the continent appears to be coming out of the wood, somebody somewhere will drive it back to the mud. Just hope the continent is not a cursed one?

Otherwise, how can individual spent 22 years in Office and still be hell-bent on turning his country to a battle ground?

Since the issue of Gambia election has come up, have tried to dissect the raison  detres that Jammeh may have that will necessitate and justify his refusal to hand over power; but none is worthy enough to my rational self.

Arguably, power is sweet but the sweetness of power is not a sufficient basis to warrant the mindless wasting of innocent souls for personal ambition, as doing so can only come from a delusioned individual.

The fact however is that sit-tight oligarchy is a common currency of the African leaders. From Idi Amin to Joseph Kabila, Kabila to Mugabe, Mugabe to Paul Biya of Cameron, among others; the African states have been enslaved and improverished by despots who called themselves leaders.

I wish the desire to stay put to power is because of scintillating performance in Office like the estwhile President of Singapore, unfortunately, their tenures lack anything to write home about. So what is the basis?

It is on this note the timely response of the ECOWAS leaders to nip the likely offshoot of Jammeh refusal to handover power to the President-elect : Adama Barrow is a welcome development through mediation talk and troop redeployment.

Be that as it may, it may be argued that it negates the fundamental principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of members States. However, the international community as a whole has the 'duty to protect' the lives and property of individuals against real and imagined threats anywhere and everywhere in the world because crisis anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere.

As the events unfold, one cannot but watch with keen interest of what becomes of Jammeh from tomorrow, perhaps is 1200 troops will be sufficient enough to withstand the entire ECOWAS troops.

The ability of the ECOWAS leaders to oust Jammeh out of power will surely serve as a pointers to other sit-tight oligarchy leaders in the region and the African continent as a whole.
