El-Rufai vs Kaduna Teachers: Which Way?

The path being tread by Mallam El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State is a suicidal but needed one as no good leader will leave the destinies of the future generations in the hands of quack teachers.

It is a necessary but unpopular decision and policy that may spell doomed for him during his re-election bid in 2019 if the lesson provided by outcome of election result against Dr. Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti State is anything to go by. The only reason it may not affect him is if the population of the non-teachers-electorates are more than the teachers and those who are sympathetic to their course.

Be that as it may, great leaders must put self last, and do the right things that will make life better not only for the present generation but also the unborn ones. This becomes more apparent and needed in light of the call not only for development but sustainable development- a development that not only meets the needs of the present generation but also does not preclude the possibility of future generations meeting their own needs.

We are indeed in a trying moment in Nigeria, a situation whereby those who are expected to educate the future leaders are themselves bereft of the requisite knowledge. It is a sorry case, and the ones that must be condemned by all and sundry.

The case of Kaduna is a replica of the deplorable state of our education system from primary to tertiary institutions. It is therefore not surprising that employers are finding it difficult to get qualified and competent candidates for vacant positions.

Over the years, I was one of those who said job is scarce, until some of friends in recruitment industry proved me wrong. For several weeks, attempt to fill like ten vacant positions was a tug of war despite employing different social media platforms.

The educational sector like other sectors in Nigeria needs urgent reformers and reforms but will there be political will to do so like El-Rufai is trying to do so without considering its consequences on election date?

Indeed, what is not right is not right. If the results being posted around on social media is anything to go by as the results of the teachers from Kaduna State, then we could as well wish Nigeria good bye as far as getting it right is concerned.

It was Frantz Bacon who said 'every generation out of its relative obscurity must discover itself, fulfil or betray it'; we cannot afford to betray it, so the needful must be done like Governor El-Rufai is trying to do.

It may not be easy, and may not go well with some sections of the State but leaders like Governor El-Rufai must know that posterity will bear witness to its quest to make things right like history has proved him right as he did when he was in Abuja as Minister of FCT.

In this regard, I can only wish him good luck in his quest for a new Kaduna State.

God bless Kaduna!
God bless Nigeria!!
