THE OBI's VOICE CALL AND THE POLITICIAN WAY

An average politician will cling to anything - religion, ethnicity, propaganda, and even diabolical means to get to power, so I'm not surprised by Obi's desperation or lust for power in his quest for the number one job in Nigeria by cajoling a revered man of God. It is in this wise, Niccolò Machiavelli said: 'the end justifies the means'. Be that as it may, note my use of 'average'.
One statement that has gotten me into trouble most times in the political circle and that has robbed me of some political benefits is my wont of saying; 'I'm not a politician'; and this I say with all sense of modesty but sincerity. Seriously, I don't think, talk or act like a politician even though some of my intellectual and technocrat friends like Bunmi Jembola or Oamen Ignatius IG would firmly disagree. So in both camps, I'm a social misfit.
Back to my essay - the politician way. Power is alluring. Power is inviting. Power is egregious. Power protects, and power empowers. Power gives fame. Power is a shield just as knowledge is armor. This accounts for the reason why men and women go all out to seek power.
In Nigeria, the most lucrative career today is politics. It can change an overnight pauper to a billionaire, especially when he or she does not mind selling his heart to the devil. It is little wonder, propaganda, and falsehood are commonplace in Nigeria's polity.
To get political power, politicians won't mind stooping to conquer. They will beg and prostrate for you, but let them get the power, they won't mind using it against you. Backstabbing and betrayals are common lexicons of an average Nigerian politician.
Thus if you are a man of truth, or modest in character, you may not fit in, and that is if you are even allowed entry. Peter Obi's description of the race to the Aso Rock as a 'religious war' is therefore not surprising. It is in his character trait as a politician - politics of divisiveness and governance of divide and rule. He divided the Catholics and the Anglicans in Anambra state, and he successfully enlarged the gap between the Christians and Muslims in Nigeria through his appeal to religion.
Be that as it may, Peter Obi is not alone in this trade. Almost every politician in Nigerian and beyond campaign is rooted in sentiments. It is not always about what they have done or what they are capable of doing. It is not even about their character or personality, it is more about the character assassination of their opponents.
At all costs, avoid politics if you do not tick skin. Avoid politics if you cannot withstand betrayals. Avoid politics if you cannot withstand falsehood.
Have a great week.
